One of my family’s favorite springtime camping recipes is for homemade sloppy Joes. Sure, it doesn’t get much more simple than cranking open a can of storebought sloppy Joe sauce, but we think you’ll agree that this easy homemade sauce blows the competition away – and will make your camping trip picnics unforgettably delicious!
Homemade Sloppy Joes
Ingredients
- 1 Tbs butter
- 1 Tbs olive oil
- 1 lb ground beef
- ½ green bell pepper, finely diced
- ½ yellow onion, finely diced
- 3 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 rounded Tbs tomato paste
- 2/3 cup ketchup
- 1/3 cup water
- 1 packed Tbs brown sugar
- 1 tsp yellow mustard
- ¾ tsp chili powder
- ½ tsp Worcestershire sauce
- ½ salt
- ¼ tsp black pepper
Yes, there are a lot of ingredients, but several are traditional pantry staples and you probably already have most of it on hand!
To serve, you’ll also need:
- American cheese slices
- Sandwich buns of your choice – go with classic hamburger buns or try Brioche or sesame seed!
Directions
- Add ground beef, oil, and butter to a skillet. Brown and crumble the beef on medium-high heat until cooked through, draining excess grease.
- Dice the bell pepper, onion, and garlic while the beef is browning. Add to the skillet, mixing with the beef, and cook until soft and the onions are translucent (about 3 minutes).
- Add all remaining ingredients, stirring well to combine. Reduce heat slightly to medium and simmer until the sauce has thickened, about 10 minutes.
- Turn on the broiler and place all the buns open face on a tray. Toast the insides of the buns under the broiler. Make sure they don’t burn!
- Spoon the sloppy Joe mix onto the buns, top with a slice of cheese, and slide back under the broiler (BRIEFLY!) to let the cheese melt. Sandwich everything together and enjoy.
