Want to enjoy the benefits of lightweight camping? Shave some extra weight off of what you’re packing – and reap the benefits of saving money on fuel and traveling economically. Here are some RV tips for enjoying a lightweight camping trip in your new or used RV. No affiliate links here! Just some ideas to get you started. Shop local or support your favorite outdoors store!
Cut the Water Weight
Water weighs a lot! One way you can decrease the weight in food and snacks is to pack dehydrated or freeze dried options. Not only do they weigh less, but they take up a lot less room! Shop online for freeze dried or dehydrated foods from vegetables to drink mixes.
Another way to reduce water weight is to only travel with the amount of water in your fresh tank that you need to get to your destination. Then plan on refilling the tank once you’re there.
Lightweight Gear and Clothes
This one will have a bit higher of an initial investment, but you’ll find that it’s worth it! Camping gear brands offer lightweight clothing that’s packable (meaning it doesn’t take up much space), weather resistant, and often wicks sweat away from your body and is quick-dry. Packing a few pieces of lightweight clothing will take up less space and go further than lots of layers of heavier clothing.
Also, take inventory of your camping gear. Need to replace a bicycle, camp chairs, or tools used around camp? Make the swap now for aluminum frames over steel, or multi-tools that serve more than one purpose, eliminating the need to pack several heavier items.
Lightweight Linens
Quick-dry towels and microfiber linens are much lighter weight than fluffy towels and thick sheets and blankets we use in every day life. Plus, quick-dry fabrics tend to take up much less room. Pro tip: replace all of your camping towels (in the bathroom and kitchen alike – and also for the pool!) with chamois/shammy substitutes.
Lightweight, packable blankets are perfect for bedding options, too. Many outdoor gear brands design their lightweight products to still retain warmth and comfort, so you can rest assured knowing that “lightweight” doesn’t have to mean “cold.”
Soaps and Suds
Ditch the water! Use tablet-form detergents and soap sheets in the bathroom. Another perk of single-use soap sheets? You can pack along extra in your bag so you’ll always be able to wash your hands – even in a public restroom that hasn’t been cleaned in…well, we won’t talk about that.
